HDPE stands for high-density polyethylene, a strong, light and chemical-resistant plastic with recycling code 2. It is the standard material for medicine bottles, jerry cans, powder jars, milk cans and chemical containers because it does not break and keeps out moisture.
HDPE stands for high-density polyethylene. It is one of the most widely used plastics in the world, and the main material for medicine bottles, jerry cans, powder jars, milk cans and chemical containers.
HDPE meaning and full form
HDPE (also written PEHD) is a type of polyethylene made from ethylene. "High density" means its molecules are packed closely, with little branching, which makes it stiffer and stronger than low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Its density is roughly 0.94–0.97 g/cm³, so it is light enough to float on water.
Why HDPE is used for bottles and containers
- Strong and unbreakable: it does not shatter like glass, even when dropped on a farm or in transit.
- Chemical resistance: it resists most acids, alkalis and many solvents, which suits medicines, agrochemicals and cleaning liquids.
- Moisture barrier: it keeps humidity away from tablets, capsules and powders.
- Light weight: lower freight cost than glass or metal.
- Easy to mould and colour: it can be blow moulded into bottles and cans, and coloured or made opaque to protect light-sensitive products.
- Recyclable: HDPE carries resin identification code 2 and is widely recycled.
Common uses of HDPE
- Pharmaceutical bottles, tablet containers and pill bottles
- Veterinary and agrochemical bottles, including twin neck dosing bottles
- Jerry cans (jerrycans) and carboys for chemicals and lubricants
- Powder and protein jars
- Milk cans, detergent and shampoo bottles
HDPE compared with other plastics
LDPE is softer and is used for squeeze bottles and inner plugs. PP is more rigid and heat resistant, so it is common for caps. PET is glass-clear and used where the product must be seen. Read the full comparison: HDPE vs LDPE vs PP vs PET and HDPE vs PET bottles.
Modern Plaspack LLP has manufactured HDPE bottles, jars and cans in Gujarat, India since 1987. See our HDPE bottle range or ask for a quote.
Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of HDPE?
High-density polyethylene.
What does HDPE mean on a bottle?
It means the bottle is made of high-density polyethylene. It is usually marked with recycling code 2 inside a triangle.
Why is HDPE used for bottles?
It is strong, light, unbreakable, resists most chemicals and is a good moisture barrier, so it protects the product during storage and transport.
Is HDPE recyclable?
Yes. HDPE (code 2) is one of the most widely recycled plastics.
