India is a major source of pharmaceutical and veterinary packaging. If you are buying HDPE bottles, jars or jerry cans from an Indian manufacturer for the first time, this checklist helps you get the right product with fewer surprises.
Short answer
Agree the specification, approve samples, collect the quality documents you need, confirm packing and shipping terms, then place a trial order before scaling up.
1. Share a clear specification
- Container type, capacity and fill volume
- Neck size and closure type (screw cap, measuring cap, inner plug, induction seal, CRC)
- Colour, weight range and any printing or labelling area
- Your product's contents, so the material can be checked for compatibility
- Annual quantity and order sizes
2. Approve samples
Ask for samples of the exact item and run your own fill, leak and compatibility tests. Keep an approved sample as the reference for future orders.
3. Collect the quality documents you need
Pharmaceutical buyers usually ask for some of these. Agree the list before ordering:
- Quality system information, for example ISO 15378 for primary pharma packaging
- Material declarations, such as USP Class VI and TSE/BSE statements
- Certificate of analysis or inspection report per batch
- Drawings with critical dimensions and tolerances
4. Confirm packing and shipping
- How containers are packed (cartons or bags, liners, quantity per carton)
- Pallets and how many cartons fit in a 20 ft or 40 ft container. Bottles are light but bulky, so freight is mostly about volume.
- Incoterms (for example FOB or CIF), port of loading and delivery time
- Labelling on each carton for batch traceability
5. Start with a trial order
A first, smaller order lets you check quality on arrival, the packing and the paperwork before you commit to regular volumes.
